Quantum improvisations. Jazz concert
City and Science Biennial
Within the framework of this unique encounter between science and art, pianist and composer Agustí Fernández and percussionist Lucía Martínez—two key figures in the Spanish jazz and free improvisation scene—will offer a concert in which risk, mutual listening, and unpredictability will set the creative pulse of the evening. Both musicians, known for their ability to construct sonic languages in real time, will propose an open and radically free dialogue, in which every gesture, every sound, arises in response to a shared and constantly transforming present.
Before the concert, Professor Maciej Lewenstein, a Polish-born theoretical physicist, researcher at ICFO (Institute of Photonic Sciences), and renowned science communicator, will speak. His career combines research in quantum mechanics with a deep interest in music, particularly jazz. In his introduction, Lewenstein will address the conceptual links between quantum thinking and musical improvisation, relating ideas such as indeterminacy, the superposition of possibilities, the entanglement of agents, and the emergence of complex structures from local and dynamic rules. His presentation will offer a thought-provoking perspective on how modern physics and jazz practice share a sensitivity to uncertainty, relationality, and potential, challenging fixed notions of control, linearity, and causality.
This event thus invites us to think about artistic creation and scientific knowledge as fields that, from different languages, converge on the same question about reality: not as a closed entity, but as an experience always under construction.
The concert is sponsored by Yamaha.
