'Women for Quantum': Gender asymmetries in the scientific career

City and Science Biennial

The publication of the values manifesto Women for Quantum The Women for Women (W4Q) manifesto in 2024 marked a turning point in the debate on gender and science, highlighting not only persistent structural inequalities but also the limited effectiveness of many institutional initiatives deployed to date to improve gender balance in research environments. Far from focusing solely on representation statistics, the manifesto poses a deeper critique: it questions models of scientific excellence that reproduce exclusionary dynamics and promotes a fundamental cultural transformation of academia and science.

In this context, we propose this roundtable as a space for critical dialogue and collective reflection on gender inequalities in research careers. We want not only to highlight the barriers faced by women and other underrepresented identities in science, but also to envision—and build—a more equitable, diverse, and welcoming professional environment.

To this end, we have the participation of various professionals and scientists who, from their backgrounds in physics and their experience in science communication, have actively contributed to challenging these inequalities. Some of them have also participated directly in drafting the W4Q manifesto, contributing a critical and committed perspective on transforming the scientific system from a feminist and pluralistic viewpoint.

This conversation not only seeks to diagnose asymmetries, but also to explore collective strategies to address them: from changes in hiring and evaluation policies, to the recognition of alternative forms of leadership, collaboration and knowledge production.
