Bertolt Brecht

The poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht He was born in Augsburg, Germany, on February 10, 1898. A lover of music and literature, he began writing poetry and songs at a very young age. After studying at the universities of Munich and Berlin, he wrote the musical drama in 1928. The Threepenny Opera, a satire of capitalism that became one of his greatest successes.

Brecht then began to develop a dramatic technique—Epic Theatre—distinct from the methods of realistic theatre. Epic Theatre included a series of distancing mechanisms that sought to "force" the spectator to reflect on what they saw, preventing any possible emotional involvement with the characters.

Due to his political activism, Brecht was forced to flee Germany in 1933. In 1941 he settled permanently in California.

Among his most significant creations are Drums in the Night, Mother Courage, The Inevitable Rise of Arturo Ui, The Life of Galileo Galilei o The Caucasian Chalk CircleHe died on August 14, 1956 in Berlin.
