Professor of Contemporary Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has been a research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Hamburg, London, and Weimar; between 2001 and 2011, he was curator at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The history of artistic culture around 1800 and the period of the historical avant-gardes has occupied a significant part of his publications. He has curated several exhibitions in Spanish and German museums. Among his recent publications are the edited volumes: Goethe: Nature, Art, Truth (2012), Art in its Global Exile: Contemporary Culture and Uprooting (2012), When Images Touch the Real (2013), Museum Model: Collecting in Contemporary Creation (2013), Alechinsky (2015), Museographies (2015), The Power of Avant-Garde (2016), and Villèlia (2017). He directs the Complutense Research Group S U+MA [University+Museum].
