José Manuel Mouriño He is a researcher, essayist, and filmmaker. With a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo, he dedicated his dissertation to a study of the Russian filmmaker and cinematic master Mikhail Romm. He has curated a retrospective on Romm for the Spanish Film Archive and is currently preparing a monograph for forthcoming publication. He is the author of several essays on filmmakers such as Norman McLaren, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Michelangelo Antonioni. He has also curated exhibitions on the latter two directors. He collaborates with the Andrei Tarkovsky International Institute as its representative and coordinator for the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. He recently extended and co-edited the book Youth Writings of Andrei Tarkovsky.

As a film director, he is the author of the following documentaries: 36 views of the Tower of Hercules (2009); Luis Seoane. Visuality, memory and synthesis (2010); The White Days, notes on the filming of Nostalghia, by Andrei Tarkovsky (2012); Manuel Vilariño. To Be Light (2016) or an essayistic documentary project (co-directed with Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego) about the relationship of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa with the city of Lisbon entitled Pessoa / LisbonThis documentary formed the basis of an exhibition, which, under the same title, opened in December 2016 in el Círculo de Bellas ArtesShe is currently working on the direction and production of a film essay about the Spanish philosopher María Zambrano. This documentary explores, among many other aspects of this thinker, her relationship with the art of cinema.
