Vandana Shiva

Vandana Shiva (1952, India) holds a PhD in Physical Sciences. She is one of the most prestigious ecologists, feminists, and philosophers of science. Involved in the fight against neoliberalism and a defender of the rights of peoples, she maintains an unconditional commitment to women and, especially, to the Earth, Mother Nature, the source of our roots. The philosopher understands the Earth as an entity that is part of the individual and, true to this sentiment, advocates for a transformation that will end climate change, inequality, injustice, wars, and hunger.

She is the author of highly influential books, such as Making Peace with the EarthEarth DemocracySoil Not OilStaying AliveStolen HarvestWater Wars y Globalization's New WarsShe has received more than twenty international awards, including the Right Livelihood Award, considered the alternative Nobel Prize (1993); the John Lennon-Yoko Ono Peace Fellowship (2008); the Sydney Peace Prize (2010); and the Calgary Peace Prize (2011). She is also a member of the World Future Council and the board of the International Forum on Globalization. 

Shiva is one of the founders of the gender unit at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Women's Environment & Development Organization (WEDO). She has worked as an advisor to various governments in India and abroad, and to non-governmental organizations such as the International Forum on Globalization, the Women's Environment & Development Organization, and the Third World Network. She chairs the Commission for the Future of Food (Italy) and the magazine Asiaweek has included her in the list of the five most powerful communicators in Asia.
