Towards a short history of Jurassic cinema
Paleontologist José Luis Sanz (Autonomous University of Madrid) is one of the leading experts on dinosaurs and, specifically, a scholar of the enduring fascination these great reptiles have held for cinema and popular culture as a whole since their origins. Just as the Lumière brothers' invention presents that unsettling duality that blends the scientific with the fantastical, the imaginary with the real, the ongoing dinosaur craze (even among young people and children) undoubtedly owes much to the reasonable coexistence of the mythological with the natural. With the paleontologist as our guide, we will present a brief history of dinosaur films, from the silent era to the present day. The opening session (September 12) will be preceded by a free lecture in which the paleontologist will introduce the five films that make up the series.
