The Italian critic Nino Frank was the first to use the term Film Noir . He coined it to describe certain films produced in Hollywood in the mid-20th century that depicted, in terrifying chiaroscuro, an unknown side of criminal activity. They delved into the social origins of crime from an aesthetic perspective akin to Expressionism.

The Maltese Falcon is considered by many to be the genre's debut film. Alongside this title, other emblematic films from the golden age of American cinema will be screened, such as Double Indemnity , To Have and Have Not, and The Killing.
