Arlit, deuxieme Paris

Arlit, a city born of uranium and emigration, located in the Niger desert, was considered in the 1970s to be the New York of 19th-century sub-Saharan Africa. A kind of land of adventure where everyone could aspire to a better life. The Tuareg rebellion and the fall in uranium prices changed all that. During the filming of his previous movie, the director met up again with old Issa, who had given him shelter in Arlit 17 years earlier when he was leaving for Europe. Now, he decides to follow the old man as he returns to Arlit for the last time to see his son and his friends. The director takes the opportunity to show us this city built on the edge of the desert. Once El Dorado and the center of the region in the 1970s, it became a ghost town after the Tuareg rebellion and the departure of the French uranium mining company, Cogema. Today, it is a transit point for undocumented migrants heading to Algeria. The film highlights the strange mix of cultures that make the place unique and magical.
