Director Alessandro Blasetti is holding auditions at Cinecittà Studios to choose a young girl to star in his new film. Among the crowd of mothers who have brought their daughters is Maddalena Cecconi, a working-class woman who dreams of her daughter Maria's success in the film industry. Against her husband's wishes, she will do everything possible to help her little girl reach the top.
