Pauwels, a student of Jean Rouch at the Sorbonne, wrote him a brief letter that proved crucial for understanding the approach to filmmaking by both professor and student. During a trip they took together to Japan, Pauwels asked Rouch, for example, how he edited his films, and the professor explained the concept of potlatchwhich will be key to Dream films.

Conceived as a travelogue, the film is a journey through Europe in an attempt to find some thirty depictions of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The film aims to be a kind of rite of passage, an imagined narrative… imagined because, since no original representation of this saint exists, he could be portrayed in any way imaginable.
