The elderly Shukichi and Tomi Hirayama prepare to travel from Onomichi to Osaka and Tokyo to visit their children. Once in the capital, their presence causes a nuisance to their family. Since their children are very busy, it falls to their daughter-in-law, Noriko, to look after them. After sending them to the Atami hot springs, the two decide to return to Onomichi; but just then, Tomi suffers a slight fainting spell.
