In the second half of the 11th century, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador, became famous for his victorious campaigns against the Muslims during the reconquest of the Kingdom of Valencia. Unjustly accused of treason, Rodrigo kills Jimena's father in a duel, but she rejects him and enters a convent.
