A young samurai, Sozaemon Aoki, arrives in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with the purpose of avenging his deceased father. However, his ineptitude with a sword eventually diminishes his already limited desire to continue his mission. Staying in a modest dwelling, Sozaemon begins to question the meaning of revenge.
