Juha
The two films featured in this double bill are Mauritz Stiller's Johan (1921) and Aki Kaurismäki's Juha (1999), both adaptations of the novel Juha (1911) by Finnish writer Juhani Aho. The novel's original story recounts the vicissitudes of a love triangle between Juha, a farmer, his wife Marja, and Shemeikka, a businessman. Stiller's and Kaurismäki's films offer a reflection on marital commitment and the conflict arising from the differences between rural life, represented by Juha and Marja, and urban life, represented by Shemeikka.
Screening of Juha [Aki Kaurismäki, 1990] with live music.
