The widowed Rosaria and her sons Simone, Rocco, Ciro, and Luca leave their homeland of Lucania to emigrate to Milan in search of work and opportunities to improve their impoverished living conditions. There they are reunited with Vincenzo, their eldest brother. The beginnings are difficult, and conflict arises between the brothers, threatening the unity of the family.
