Actress Desirée Armfeldt is on tour in a small town at the turn of the century. Her former lover, lawyer Fredrik, whispers her name in his sleep beside his young wife, Anne. Unusual in the director's career, this film is a comedy set amidst luxury, sophistication, and theatrical lights, yet narrated in a classical and somewhat impersonal tone, while still dissecting the social norms and customs it portrays.
