Teaspoon + For Sama
TEASPOON Aban Bharucha Deohans, India, 20 min, 2019, VOSE [DCP]
Rajiv, his wife Kavita, and Rajiv's father live in an apartment. Rajiv works as an insurance agent and travels frequently. Kavita represents a cosmetics company and works from home, as she cannot leave her paralyzed father-in-law alone. Furthermore, one habit Kavita hates is the way the old man summons her. He uses a spoon to tap on the bedpost to call her. What's frustrating is that he never does this when Rajiv is home. Therefore, Rajiv cannot understand Kavita's frustration. An argument during dinner escalates, and the resentment carries over into the next morning. A series of incidents become ingredients for a volatile mix, leading to a disturbing conclusion.
FOR SAMA Waad Al-KhateabEdward Watts, Great Britain, 2019, 1h40, VOSE [DCP]
Journalist Waad al-Kateab spent five years documenting the atrocities inflicted by President Assad's regime on civilians in Aleppo. An economics student at the University of Aleppo when the war began in 2011, Waad took her camera to the streets and began documenting the devastation wrought by the Syrian regime and its allies. At the same time, she found love and became a mother, marrying Hamza (one of the 32 doctors who remained in eastern Aleppo) and giving birth to her first child, Sama, as airstrikes ravaged the city.
