Holly Martins, a mediocre writer of Western novels, arrives in Vienna in 1947, a city divided into four zones occupied by the Allied powers of World War II. His intention is to visit Harry Lime, a childhood friend who has promised him a job. But his arrival coincides with Lime's unexpected death in a hit-and-run accident, and the head of the military police informs Holly that his friend was dangerously involved in the black market.
