In 1969, from his exile in France, the Greek director Costa-Gavras decided to adapt for the big screen a novel by the writer and diplomat Vassilis Vassilikos, which denounced the 1963 assassination of Grigoris Lambrakis, a left-wing Greek member of parliament and pacifist. The screenplay was written by Jorge Semprún. The result was one of the best political films ever made.
In a country ostensibly governed by democracy but dominated by the police and military, an opposition member of parliament (Yves Montand) is assassinated in the street after presiding over a peace rally. The murder, allegedly committed by extremists from a far-right group, is covered up by the government and the military. The investigation is entrusted to a young magistrate (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who delves into the murky affair with the help of a photojournalist (Jacques Perrin).
