Arthur von Gerlach is the most mysterious and unknown of the Expressionist filmmakers. He directed only two films. Vanina (1922) and Zur Chronik von GrieshuusA dark and gripping melodrama based on a short novel by Theodor Storm, the plot revolves around Hinrich, the son of a feudal lord, who falls in love with a young woman who is the daughter of one of his father's serfs. His brother Detlev then enters the picture, challenging Hinrich's claim to the throne.
