Radu Jude
In collaboration with the Gijón Film Festival, Márgenes, ECAM, and the Romanian Institute, and curated by Javier H. Estrada, we present the first retrospective in Madrid of one of the most important contemporary filmmakers, Radu Jude (Bucharest, 1977), winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2015 and the Golden Bear in 2021. A selection of five of his films, including his two most recent: Eight Postcards From Utopia (co-directed with the philosopher Christian Ferencz-Flatzy and premiered worldwide at the last Locarno Film Festival) and Sleep #2a radical tribute to Sleep (Andy Warhol, 1963).
Radu will visit the Cine Estudio to participate in presentations and discussions, and will teach a masterclass organized by the Madrid International Film Festival or Margins Festival,and ECAM, followed by the Madrid premiere of Eight Postcards From UtopiaIn this film, Jude continues to focus on the contradictions and hypocrisies of his country through his caustic humor, synthesizing formal exploration with social and political criticism. Eight Postcards from Utopia It is a fascinating experimental documentary made with found footage and edited entirely from advertisements from post-socialist Romania. A playful, hilarious, and provocative portrait of Romania's transition from socialism to contemporary consumer culture. In addition, the Romanian filmmaker will address aspects of his filmmaking practice in his masterclass, such as the incorporation of documentary elements into fiction and the coexistence of formal exploration with political engagement and contemporary reality, with a particular focus on the most recent stage of his career.
