Bonifacio. The Inner Scar (CBA, 2007, 45´)

OF IT ALL.

Bonifacio (San Sebastián, 1933) is one of the most important and original Spanish painters of the last half-century. During the 1960s, he cultivated an informalist abstraction. At the end of that decade, he moved to Cuenca, where he came into contact with artists from El Paso such as Saura, Millares, and Guerrero, began to learn printmaking techniques, and developed a highly original figurative style, characterized by biomorphic forms and a very personal use of color. Bonifacio's crucial presence in the Cuenca art scene was demonstrated by his involvement in the design of the stained-glass windows in the cathedral's apse.

HOW WAS IT DONE?

Bonifacio. The inner scar.
(CBA, 2007) was filmed last autumn at the painter's home in the Lavapiés neighborhood of Madrid. The bulk of the documentary is a lengthy interview with the painter, divided into three parts: his origins, his introduction to painting, and his painting career. The interview was supplemented by a long sequence filmed at the home of Antonio Gallo, an engraver, neighbor, and friend of Bonifacio, and the inclusion of a series of historical documents, mostly from the painter's personal archive.
The filming had the special collaboration of commissioner Pilar García Borras and the painter Miguel Galanda.

THE EXHIBITION

The documentary was made to coincide with preparations for the exhibition " On the Battlefields ," a major retrospective of Bonifacio's work at the CBA, which includes canvases, drawings, series of engravings, and lithographs created between 1968 and 2005. The exhibition catalog, which will be held from February 8 to April 1, will be published in a special edition that includes a DVD with the documentary.
