ACCIONA Chair: Slavoj Žižek
The Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek participates within the framework of Escuela SUR with the conference Ernst Lubitsch: cynicism, humor and commitment, which he will pronounce after receiving the Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes.
Theodor Adorno turned Benedetto Croce's historicist and paternalistic question about "what has died and what still lives in Hegel's dialectic" on its head: if Hegel is truly alive as a thinker, then the question that should be posed today is the opposite—"what would Hegel think of OUR HISTORY“Exactly the same can be said of Ernst Lubitsch’s films – what would Lubitsch think of our contemporary world?” Therein lies Lubitsch’s enduring relevance: while he would undoubtedly have rejected populist neo-racism with aversion, he would also have immediately perceived the falsity of its opposite, politically correct moralism, clearly detecting its hidden complicity. Lubitsch would have been horrified to see the extent to which the perverse pleasures of the obscene, even of irony, have shifted to the right, while the left finds itself increasingly trapped in an ascetic, puritanical moralism.”
