OFNI: Unidentified Film Object. Cinema and thought
Online course | Cortos Sur program
Cortos SUR is a new program of short workshops and seminars from the Escuela SUR del Círculo de Bellas ArtesOpen to all those interested in the intersection of art and thought, they were created with the aim of becoming a space for reflection on key ideas and concepts of contemporary art and culture.
For some time now, we have witnessed repeated predictions about the decline or eventual death of cinema. However, we find Fredric Jameson's diagnosis more insightful when he states that in a landscape dominated by the monotony of consumer formulas, the world of cinema has recently been struck by some strange meteorites.
These "unidentified film objects" sometimes resemble the convulsions of a modern movement that was thought to be lost, like the monumental films of Lav diaz or the project DAU, the Total artwork collective coordinated by Ilya KhrzhanovskyOthers, however, seem like probes sent from an uncertain space-time, such as the facilities of Lawrence Abu Hamdan y Apichatpong Weerasethakulor electrifying jolts of languages difficult to define, like those that articulate the pieces of Meriem Bennani y Albertina Carri.
This course proposes a journey through these unidentified film objects: we will cautiously walk around their craters, appreciating their unintelligibility, assessing the damage they inflict on the landscape, and attempting to interpret them as omens, warnings, or glimpses of something we cannot yet conceive. Throughout the various sessions, we will offer tools and hypotheses for interpreting their materials, trace their possible origins, and explore their worlds in extinction and their worlds yet to be discovered.
