Círculo de Cámara

Season 2025-26

Music for a centenary

The seventh edition ofel Círculo de Cámara It expands its offering to fifteen concerts and is organized into a series of basic cycles that feature the string quartet and song as the main protagonists, essential genres of the chamber music repertoire, which also serve to extol the names of Beethoven and Schubert through two series that present some of the most admired works in the entire history of music.

Schubert Dual brings together no fewer than five lieder recitals, featuring the composer's three song cycles and a pair of varied evenings showcasing five key figures in contemporary song: two of the genre's most illustrious veterans, Goerne and Gerhaher, are joined by the increasingly established Schuen, the young and captivating Krimmel, and the equally young Lisa Davidsen, a soprano well-known in the operatic world, but whose career in song appears equally promising. Schubert Dual is rounded out with a concert in which two celebrated European pianists (Andsnes and Chamayou) will offer a four-hand recital that, in addition to Schubert's most important works, includes some of the Games by Kurtág, the great dean of contemporary composition, who is about to celebrate his centenary.

Beethoven in Twilight is dedicated to another body of fundamental works: Beethoven's iconic and visionary late quartets, for which five great international quartets have been invited: Diotima, Danel, Jerusalem, Gerhard, and Quiroga. They will complement their recitals with a selection of other essential works of the genre. Thus, the program will also include Leoš Janáček's two quartets, up to three by Haydn (including two from Op. 20, a crucial moment in the consolidation of the Viennese quartet), Kurtág's Officium breve (which the Gerhard Quartet will perform at a time when the Hungarian master will have already turned 100), and Shostakovich's most celebrated quartet, No. 8, one of the most dramatic in the entire repertoire.

The Shostakovich Year is celebrated in another series, which, in addition to that quartet, will offer the rarely performed Piano Sonata No. 2, the much better-known Piano Quintet (works that Leonskaja will perform coinciding with the presence of the Danel Quartet, absolute specialists in the composer), and the formidable Preludes and Fugues, which will mark the return to the series of the unstoppable Yulianna Avdeeva. The Preludes and Fugues connect Shostakovich with an essential...el CírculoBach, who will close the course with the complete Sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin presented by two great connoisseurs of his music, Bezuidenhout and Faust.

With all that said, there are still two events to discuss: the now classic evening featuring the best silent films, which will once again be enlivened by the music of Stephen Prutsman played live by the Arbós Trio, this year again with a genius of comedy, Buster Keaton; and the belated presentation in Madrid of a pianist of enormous talent, but who seems to have struggled to reach the peak she is beginning to glimpse, Anna Vinnitskaya, with a program of composers who are especially close to her from the beginning of her career (Ravel, Scriabin, Brahms, Rachmaninoff).
