Mr. Juan @simetrico.es from Jesús Campos

Review the myth of Don Juan It cannot be approached by simply updating a character who cannot be updated. Neither the mockery, nor the sexuality, nor the power dynamics would retain their relevance with a mere cosmetic makeover. Updating Don Juan requires a completely new structure in which only the essential elements of the drama can and should survive: violence, sex, religion, and death.

Of all the social changes affecting the Don Juan myth, perhaps the most significant stems from the emerging role of women in society today, a role mirrored by a withdrawal (if not equivalent, then equally significant) on the part of men. Therefore, the seducer-seduced woman dynamic cannot be taken for granted, as she herself could very well be the seducer.

Nor does the Christian Church behave with the intransigence it did in past centuries. Many sectors within it operate according to genuinely evangelical principles, so to maintain the dramatic impact of traditional Don Juans, it is necessary to situate the story within the most fundamentalist sectors of the Church, or even within sects.

Death is perhaps the only element that remains unchanged, and even then, nuances are necessary. Why, then, maintain the reference to the myth? Because the dichotomy of fundamentalism and transgression is still present, and it matters little whether the character who sets the drama in motion is a man or a woman.

In any case, and to avoid confusion arising from the new approach, the title with which it is convened alludes to "d.juan" as a reference and link with tradition; the "@" indicates its current relevance; the "symmetrical" signifies the ambivalence of Don Juan and Doña Inés; and the ".es" closes as an unequivocal designation of origin for the absurdities that, outside of here, would be poorly understood.
