KARST

Resis Festival

Following its presentation in Santiago de Compostela and within the framework of the prestigious RESIS Festival —which this year pays tribute to Rihm and Lachenmann—, KARST arrive at Círculo de Bellas Artes as one of the season's standout productions. A work that explores transforming soundscapes, as harsh as they are hypnotic, and which continues its international tour in collaboration with major cultural institutions.

"Skins and fabrics undergo a mineralization process. They are transformed into stone, into an architecture made of frozen air, into rocky surfaces inside a cave in constant metamorphosis."

The whole space resonates. Everything emits an echo: it amplifies, resonates, expands, or disappears like a ritual in a language we don't understand.

Twelve voices learn to speak, imitating what they hear. They order in their mouths the world they see and hear, constructing images of space, fragments of meaning, words.

The composition, written for twelve voices and four percussionists, weaves a sonic tapestry from texts taken from Book of the Dead from ancient Egypt, Leonardo da Vinci's treatise on painting, the poetry of Ángel Valente, and fragments of The Twilight of the Gods by Richard Wagner. Voices and instruments converse with each other, generating echoes, resonances and amplifications that expand space and alter the perception of time.

The work presents itself as a hybrid of landscape, habitable sculpture, soundscape, and clothing. The boundaries between these elements blur, creating a constantly metamorphosing territory where materiality transforms and sound becomes an ephemeral architecture.
