In 1920, Ramón María del Valle-Inclán wrote one of the essential works of Spanish drama, Luces de Bohemia (Bohemian Lights ). This text inaugurated a new way of seeing, conceptualizing, and writing: the grotesque, a literary genre that distorts reality and subjects language to a highly personal interpretation. Valle-Inclán himself coined his own definition of it in Luces de Bohemia : "The tragic sense of Spanish life can only be expressed through a systematically distorted aesthetic."

Turbulent characters and grotesque situations unfold over the two days that the blind poet Max Estrella, along with his friend Latino and the rest of the nocturnal characters, roam the seedy underbelly of Madrid. Throughout the night, these two vagrants encounter the city's entire underclass: criminals, prostitutes, underpaid proletarians, police officers, journalists, government ministers… In short, a complete microcosm of the society of that era, one that isn't so different from our own.
