Theater: Maritime Ode

(Language: Portuguese | Subtitles: Spanish)
Fernando Pessoa. He is the most representative figure of 20th-century Portuguese poetry. His literature encoded different heteronyms: Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos, and Alberto Caeiro constitute personalities with thematic interests, literary styles, and points of view distinct from those of their own author.
Maritime ode It is one of the most extraordinary poems of Alvaro de Campos, whose text turned 100 years old in 2015. More than a dramatic text —it lacks characters or action—, it is a kind of verbal delirium, literarily structured, with an intense, rhythmic and precise aesthetic.
A witness to the modern world, Campos celebrates in Maritime ode The industrial and mechanical civilization is depicted in poems of torrential and violent style, but it also expresses the disappointment of urban daily life by adopting the point of view of the city man.
The protagonist of the text finds himself in a seaport and embarks on a journey within himself, in which he imaginatively travels through all the seas and bays, and experiences the identities of all the men, women, and children who have traveled on ships from the beginning to the end of time.
This theatrical performance coincides with the exhibition Pessoa / Lisbon, which welcomes el Círculo de Bellas Artes between December 2016 and March 2017. It is an exhibition about the Lisbon-born poet, essayist, and translator, based on a series of audiovisual materials. For its part, the Cine Estudio It projects, during the month of December, a film series related directly or indirectly to the writer's mental world.
