Benedetto Lupo, piano
In this recital, the superb Italian pianist Benedetto Lupo brings together two essential figures of German Romanticism, united by a friendship that began in September 1853 when a young Brahms arrived at the Schumann home in Düsseldorf, displaying such overflowing talent that Robert Schumann immediately consecrated him in an article, declaring him the "chosen one" they had been waiting for. Two major cycles from Schumann's early 30s, the Scenes from childhood Op.15 and the Kreislerian Op. 16 is counterbalanced with two of Brahms' autumnal collections from the 90s. The youthful melancholy and exaltation, those two contrasting characters so often in Schumann, are thus combined here with the naked, exquisite essentiality of Brahms who seemed to be saying goodbye to life.
