Mandelring Quartet II

The second concert that the Mandelring Quartet dedicates to the complete works of Shostakovich begins in 1952, the year of the premiere of Quartet No. 5, a work of exceptional symphonic scope, close to the expressive atmosphere of his Tenth Symphony, which would be premiered the following year. It is followed by a festive, carefree piece, Quartet No. 6, premiered in 1956, a work of fresh and unpretentious diatonicism. With Quartets Nos. 7 and 8, both from 1960, Shostakovich shifts from pure music toward personal confession. The 7th is a short but introspective and profound work. The 8th, perhaps the best known of all his quartets, was born after a visit to Dresden, which reminded him of his terrible experience of the war in Leningrad. It is a work in five movements that includes quotations from earlier pieces by the composer.
