Isabelle Faust, violin & Kristian Bezuidenhout, harpsichord

Always Bach

Presumably written during Bach's final years in Cöthen, between 1720 and 1723, the six Sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin are trio sonatas. This means that the keyboard instrument doesn't merely provide continuo; rather, played by the harpsichord's right hand, it contributes one of the voices in the imitative interplay of the scores. The other voice is that of the violin. The harpsichordist's left hand plays the bass, which, in Bach's case, often enters into dialogue with the other two. The first five pieces follow the characteristic four-movement form of the sonata da chiesa; the sixth is different, as several versions of it have survived. Whichever version Faust and Bezuidenhot choose, the season's finale will be Bachian—that is to say, glorious.
