The Marchioness Rosalinda

The Marchioness Rosalinda It is a fable that premiered in 1912 with María Guerrero in the starring role. Valle-Inclan It is subtitled “a sentimental and grotesque farce,” and in it, the traditions of the Commedia dell'Arte and courtly theater are exquisitely fused. The Marchioness Rosalinda is fed up with her husband, the Marquis Don Froilán, who is much older than she, and falls under the spell of Harlequin, who has just arrived with his farcical wagon, along with Columbine, Pierrot, and Punchinello, to take up residence in the palace gardens. Upon learning of the affair, the Marquis orders two bandits to give Harlequin a good scare.

The UC3M Theatre Group, with twenty-five years of pedagogical tradition, is part of the Arts Department, a service through which the Carlos III University of Madrid promotes the arts with an international focus. To spy behind the hedge
The moon offers me its horns,
And I must tell you the secret
of the Marchioness Rosalinda.
As the blue afternoon was dying,
I heard a sigh in the gazebo,
I hesitated when I heard it, wondering if it could be
a poet's madrigal. (...)
All tearful, white and beautiful,
The Marchioness passed by, dreaming,
and on her skirt, like a star,
A glowworm was trembling. (…)
Scent of rose and apple
They will have my verses at the same time,
like a courtly farce
from Versailles or Aranjuez. (…)
Enveloped in the chimeric halo
that the metaphorical moon gives,
It carries an esoteric prestige
as an allegorical figure. (…)
