Mariana Pineda | By Federico García Lorca

In 1924, Federico García Lorca wrote this play whose main voice, that of Mariana Pineda Muñoz, emerges from a woman who was condemned to death in the 19th century for her staunch defense of liberal ideas.

The stage performance of Mariana Pineda It was hampered by the restrictions imposed by Primo de Rivera's censorship. The premiere took place in 1927 at the Goya Theatre in Barcelona. Margarita Xirgu played the lead role, and the sets were designed by Dalí.

Mariana Pineda It is an early work by García Lorca, but it already displays all the virtues of the poet and playwright from Granada. The subordination of the political universe to the emotional one humanizes the dramatic core of the narrative and gives it an eternal and universal meaning: "I am Liberty, because love willed it!"
