Winner of the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1986, Mario Brunello has enjoyed a distinguished career alongside the world's leading orchestras, conductors, and soloists. However, in recent years he has distinguished himself as one of the most renowned piccolo cellists , an instrument Bach occasionally used in the 1720s for some cantatas and for the sixth of his cello suites. In this concert, Brunello takes a bold approach by focusing not on music Bach conceived for the cello , but rather on his solo violin works from around 1720: three sonatas and three partitas that are now considered the bible of the instrument, with the chaconne from Partita No. 2 elevated to a monument of Western culture. Brunello will perform his own arrangements.
