The Boy Who Flies (Roland Schimmelpfennig)

Through a chorus of six characters of different ages, each representing a distinct stratum of time, Roland Schimmelpfennig constructs an ironic and terrifying fairy tale, a contemporary tragedy that masterfully recreates that black hole, that enormous void left after a loss. A black hole that swallows everything, that dilutes time, that merges "is, was, and will be" into one and the same. Comical at times, terrifying at others; always ironic and bitter, The boy who flies It is a magnificent and surprising polyphonic piece, of enormous theatricality, unsettling and moving, which reaffirms its author as one of the most interesting voices in current European theatre

A foretold accident, a fatal coincidence, a car striking a child and sending him flying. Three hours earlier, the child was singing in church with his classmates. Three hours later, his father, in the kitchen, receives the tragic news. Three hours earlier. The precise moment of impact. Three hours later. What was happening below, underground, in the sewers, beneath the earth? What was happening above, in the bell tower, high atop the church? What was happening around them, at Mass, in the city, in the street? What was Mom doing? What was she thinking? What was Dad doing? Where was he going?
What about the people, the teachers, the workers, the children?
