The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation Madrid presents for the second consecutive year the Young Curators Residency Program in Spain. The project is sponsored by the Reale Foundation and is based on the residency model that has been in place in Italy since 2006, organized by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin.

In this second edition, curated by Alejandro Alonso Díaz , three curators have been selected: Anouchka Rajendran (India), Akis Kokkinos (Greece), and Yonma Osman (USA), all from leading curatorial academies worldwide. Each of the three has undertaken an immersion period in the Spanish art scene, and at the end of their stay, the Minerva Gallery will host a group exhibition based on their research. The selected artists are: Adrián Alemán , Cristina Mejías , Dennis Dizon , Florencia Rojas , iki yos piña narváez funes , Jokkoo Collective , and Raisa Maudit.

The project that concludes the second edition of YCRP explores volcanic eruption as a healing process for colonial and extractive economies based on race, gender, and nature . To this end, it brings together the subtle voices of seven artists based in Spain who reimagine the grammars of geology—as a colonial science and study of the earth—and dissolve the structural and taxonomic classifications of oppressed bodies.

Following the earthquake that triggered the eruption of Cumbre Vieja, the volcanic peak on the island of La Palma, on September 19, 2021, the project considers the most destructive and transformative natural phenomenon in recent Spanish history . The lava flow covered more than 670 hectares of land, forcing the evacuation of approximately 7.000 people. The exhibition delves into the La Palma volcanic eruption to explore current geopolitical debates , existing systems of thought , and their ethical and political consequences . Like an open wound, the earth's blood vessels rise to the surface, and when the bleeding stops and healing begins, new territories emerge from the scabs. Within these territories, the invited artists create new spatio-temporal geographies that represent a liberating future for those islands that may potentially emerge beyond anthropocentric temporalities.

This project is the culmination of the second edition of the Residency Program for Young Curators , launched by the Foundation in 2020 with the sponsorship of the Reale Foundation. The program aims to bridge the gap between the final stage of aspiring curators' studies and their entry into the professional world. Building networks and helping young curators from different countries deepen their understanding of the Spanish art scene and its international dissemination are two of the key aspects of this residency program, which is structured as an independent training activity; an artistic and research journey connecting institutions, museums, foundations, galleries, and, of course, artists with young professionals in the art world.
