Carlos Saura Photographer

In the manner of a Renaissance man, Carlos Saura He has practiced all his artistic activity on the same plane, never separating one facet from another. His creative world encompasses diverse disciplines which, although concentrated in film as a unifying element of narratives constructed by images and sound, he has never ceased to practice with total enjoyment and dedication.
He came to the world of moving images through photography, through the analysis of the forms with which this discipline confronted graphic modernity in search of its own style and syntax, and from the very beginning he stood out among the best. It was in the 1940s that a camera allowed him to explore his world, his family, and the plateau landscape of his beloved Cuenca region. Since then, he has never been without this device that allows him to create images in the form of an intimate diary of all his emotional and creative activity. Born into a family with strong ties to painting and music, Carlos, in his daily work, resembles a tireless and joyful sponge, absorbing a multitude of techniques.
Around his first passion, photography, Carlos Saura has built an eclectic universe encompassing all his experiences, from the depictions of poverty and cold in autarkic Spain to his later passion for photographs colored and manipulated by his own hand; from the images that construct sets, essays, and aesthetic analyses for his filmography, to everything that has populated his affections, his most intimate life, his family. The variety of paths explored is so vast that we must acknowledge the unclassifiable nature of his photographic work and, at the same time, recognize that any cliché would be far too restrictive for this creator. His output functions more like a personal diary that marks the events of his life without distinction, whether personal or professional. It is as if this artist entrusted the image with all his expressive capacity for any use, any technique or format, any form of human communication.
To develop a graphically coherent discourse with the variety of his production, this exhibition traces a path parallel to his life, which aims to simultaneously present passions and realities under the guidance of his own gaze.
