In 1979, Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. These ten years disrupted Europe and also witnessed events of immense significance—the full extent of which was not immediately apparent—that left a profound mark.

In this era of transition, the advent of Western liberal democracy was seen as the culmination of sociocultural evolution. Geographical, economic, cultural, political, and aesthetic boundaries were opened, and it could even be argued that the limits between photography and other artistic expressions disappeared entirely.

This exhibition presents a diverse range of perspectives on the tensions generated in this era through the work of important photographers. It demonstrates why the lens through which photographers of the 1980s viewed the old industrial society—whose end they sensed—and the abrupt onset of globalization led to a new way of understanding the world.

On May 31st at 18:00 pm, an open dialogue will take place with the exhibition curators, Alexis Fabry and María Wills; photographers Chris Steele-Perkins, Peter Fraser, and Laurenz Berges; and collector Nicolas Motelay. It will be held in the Picasso Room and admission is free until capacity is reached.
