Itziar Okariz. Diary of dreams (The beige notebook)

The transcription of her dreams, those she barely remembers, forms the basis of Itziar Okariz's performances. This material was collected in Dreams (Caniche, 2022), in which she pays special attention to the structure that sustains words, and to the possibility of disturbing and reorienting them. Itziar Okariz uses this destabilization to produce plastic, poetic events; also to unveil the skeleton, the norm. And there is something extraordinary about that.

This time we delve into the artist's unspoken notebook, into her latest dreams, yet unread, yet unheard. Words written to be spoken aloud, to take shape in an improvisation, in a live reading. A body standing, a person in front of you. The most basic configuration of a body facing an audience.

Itziar Okariz (San Sebastián, 1965) is an artist who works within the framework of action and performance, questioning the norms of language and the production of signs that define us. Her work—performances, actions, videos, installations, and text-based pieces—through which she deploys a form of dissent, examines the links between territory, body, ritual, sexuality, and semiotics. Her work has been shown in numerous national and international exhibitions, including Unquiet Objects (Disjecta, Portland, 2021); Moving Words (Rimi Scenekunst, Stavanger, 2021); Bodies of Water (13th Shanghai Biennale, 2020); pierced by (Spanish Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, 2019, together with Sergio Prego); I Never Said Umbrella (Tabakalera, Donostia, 2018); A construction… (CA2M, Madrid, 2018); Idiorrhythmias (MACBA, Barcelona, 2017), or Itziar Okariz (Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel, 2017). She also maintains an intense teaching activity. She lives between New York and Bilbao.
