Nathalie Daoust. Korean Dreams
Nathalie Daoust 's latest project , Korean Dreams , presents a complex series of photographs that investigates the unsettling emptiness of North Korea. The images reveal a country that seems to exist outside of time, immersed in a carefully choreographed mirage. Daoust has spent much of her career exploring the chimerical world of fantasy: the hidden desires and impulses that compel people to dream, to go beyond the limits of convention and flee from reality. This escapist impulse is understood, in this case, not as an individual choice, but as a way of life imposed on an entire nation.
Photography in North Korea is subject to a highly restrictive policy that, if violated, carries severe penalties. Taking pictures is only permitted in areas authorized by the regime. Nathalie Daoust dares to transgress these rules, capturing forbidden people, places, and moments with her lens.
The Canadian artist deliberately darkens her photographs, seeking a camera obscura effect that mimics how information is transferred in North Korea: photographs, like the people of North Korea, are manipulated until the underlying truth is nothing more than a blur. Daoust aims to make us question truths we believe to be immutable simply because we can see them. The resulting images speak of North Korean society, of lost information, hidden truths, and their manipulation.
