Captive Thought: The Tyranny of the Image in Polish Photography after 1945
2011 marks the centenary of the birth of Czesław Miłosz (Lithuania, 1911 – Kraków, 2004), one of the most important writers of the 20th century, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981. To commemorate this occasion, el Círculo de Bellas Artes hosts an exhibition and a symposium around his figure.
Inspired by the writer's work of the same name, this exhibition brings together 65 photographs of the most important Polish artists of the time and traces the testimony of an entire generation under totalitarianism. The captive thought This is a collection of essays by Mišosz in which the author expresses his rejection of the Polish communist regime. This exhibition not only focuses on a specific historical context but also aims to spark reflection on the lack of freedom of thought in some contemporary societies.
The artists featured in the exhibition are the following: Stefan Arczy?ski, Zdzis?aw Beksi?ski, Witold Dederko, Zbigniew D?ubak, Mariusz Hermanowicz, Jerzy Lewczy?ski, Krystyna ?yczywek, Marek Piasecki, Wojciech Plewi?ski, Zofia Rydet, Leonard Sempoli?skiegi, Andrzej Strumi??o and Tadeusz Sumi?ski.
