Pessoa / Lisbon

Fernando Pessoa. (Lisbon, 1888-1935), poet, essayist, and translator, is the most representative figure of 20th-century Portuguese poetry. His literary output elevated and innovated the language of his country by introducing certain aspects characteristic of European avant-garde movements, such as Futurism and Modernism.

His work also brings together a multitude of voices alongside his own. The Lisbon-born writer embodies perhaps the most famous example of heteronym production in the 20th century: among his numerous alter egos, three stand out for their importance—Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis—along with an essential and reflective voice, Bernardo Soares. Through them, Pessoa split himself in two and cultivated disparate interests and concerns. Through them, the variety of nuances in his personality, the variety of voices and styles, is revealed.

Exhibition Pessoa / Lisbon It facilitates access to the life and work of Fernando Pessoa through two complementary tools: the Atlas Pessoaa kind of hypertextual map that allows free navigation through different fragments of the poet, encouraging new readings and interpretations; and the documentary Pessoa / Lisbon, divided into 27 scenes, each of which corresponds to a specific location in the city of Lisbon linked to the writer's life.

Fernando Pessoa's relationship with the city of Lisbon is a true emblem within universal literature in terms of the theatricalization of the writing process, and the way in which inhabiting the places of an author is reflected in his own work.

Coinciding with this exhibition, el Círculo de Bellas Artes hosts the theatrical production Maritime OdeBased on one of Álvaro de Campos's most extraordinary poems, it was presented at the XIV Mostra de la Cultura Portuguesa. Furthermore, the Cine Estudio has scheduled a cycle with Lisbon films that can be directly or indirectly related to the writer's mental world.
