Alberto García-Alix. Self-Portrait | PHE 14
Self-Portrait is not intended to be a diary of Alberto García-Alix; it does not present a chronological record of his life, nor is it an egocentric exercise. For the photographer, the concept of self-portrait is very broad, encompassing a large part of his work in which he sees himself reflected. It is difficult to find a piece in Alix's work that is not intensely self-referential, and one could even say that his entire body of work forms one large self-portrait.
The exhibition traces his career from the first photographs of this type – taken in the late seventies – to images of fragments of his body that respond to different needs when telling his particular decomposition of the self-portrait.
Alberto García-Alix (León, 1956) has received Spain's most prestigious awards in recognition of his career: the National Photography Prize (1999), the Madrid Community Photography Prize (2004), and the PHotoEspaña Prize (2012). He has published a dozen photography books, 50 texts—essays, stories, and tales—and has created videos that merge words and images.
