Walter Benjamin. Constellations
The reception of the philosopher's work Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) was relatively late in his career; it wasn't until the 1960s that he began to arouse widespread interest. Today, Benjamin has become the foremost interpreter of the most characteristic transformations of our time. This exhibition proposes a contemporary engagement with his thought through three elements.
Firstly, Constellations This is an attempt to explore some central concepts in Walter Benjamin's work through images. It comprises a collection of audiovisual citations—film scenes, photographs, paintings, sound recordings, animations, and historical documents—arranged according to a methodology developed by Benjamin himself. The result is an audiovisual piece, divided into six chapters, each dedicated to a central concept in Benjamin's work.
Second, the Benjamin Atlas It is a computer tool that allows users to navigate through a wide selection of Benjamin's texts, linked by hyperlinks and covering diverse topics and origins. Again, this is a strategy that Benjamin anticipated through the complex system of referencing, archiving, and indexing he employed in his writings.
Finally, the Hearing Models They recover the scripts that Benjamin wrote between 1929 and 1933 for Radio Southwest Germany in Frankfurt, with new voiceovers in Spanish.
This exhibition is part of the machinery of a project The CBA's far-reaching project on the work of the German philosopher is complemented by a conference and a film series featuring the films and genres that particularly influenced Benjamin throughout his life.
