The distance between the stage and the audience is sometimes vast. For the public, trying to understand the techniques, inspirations, and artistic designs of musicians involves a complex, intuitive exercise driven by curiosity. Hence the purpose of this series, which will take place every Wednesday in May, featuring a select group of artists from the field of musical creation. In each session, each artist will share their daily work in the studio and the creation of the unique sonic landscapes that constitute their signature sound. They will also demonstrate, through musical examples, the main techniques and instruments they use. And all of this will take place in an interactive environment where attendees can ask questions about the topics discussed.

Javier Ruibal is a composer, arranger, guitarist, singer, and lyricist. Winner of the National Prize for Contemporary Music (2017), the Medal of Andalusia for the Arts (2007), and the Goya Award for Best Original Song (2020), he has released 13 albums to date. Unique and difficult to categorize, he enjoys the prestige bestowed upon him by the originality of his music and the meticulous craftsmanship of his creations. He possesses a powerful and nuanced voice and a proven talent as a guitarist. From the beginning, he has pursued an interdisciplinary, multicultural music with a global appeal, respectfully and skillfully blending different sounds. Starting from the sounds of his native Andalusia, he journeys through diverse and vibrant harmonies: from the Maghreb to Brazil, from India to the Caribbean, riding on a highly personal flamenco style that has significantly influenced what has come to be known as nuevo flamenco (new flamenco). Considered a musician's musician, he is respected and praised by critics and the entire artistic community. From jazz and flamenco to classical and singer-songwriter music, he creates his own unique sound and poetry that moves and stirs emotions, as well as entertains and provokes reflection on our most sublime desires and our old sorrows and flaws. Ultimately, his art is for spiritual growth and renewing the hope that only we can resolve the wrongs we inflict upon ourselves. He has composed music for other artists, as well as for film, television, dance, and theater.

María Xosé Silvar, SÉS (A Coruña, 1982), holds degrees in Galician Philology and Social Anthropology. She grew up immersed in traditional Galician folklore and, in 2011, released the first of her seven albums, which she has performed on stages throughout Europe and Latin America. Her music travels between North and South American rhythms, reimagined in Galician and with a feminine perspective. SÉS is a singer-songwriter with a rising career who is now considered a revolutionary force on the Galician music scene. If there's one thing that stands out about her, it's her enormous charisma and personal strength, already amply demonstrated in hundreds of concerts on diverse stages in towns and cities. Little by little, and thanks to word of mouth, her intense personality and honesty have won over audiences with a torrent of energy that calls for unity and a challenge to the status quo. SES's style blends the perfect ingredients for an original and genuine result: rock 'n' roll, Galician oral tradition, and a certain cadence of Latin American singer-songwriter music, all delivered with a punk attitude and a constant dialogue with her fans. Her bold, innovative, powerful, and direct message makes her the voice of many, the precise megaphone that defends what it would be ideal to believe in. Singer or singer? "I'm not a singer. I'm a singer. A singer is someone who has the talent. A singer is someone who has the reason to sing." This phrase, with which Carlos Puebla defined himself, will be the starting point for SES's talk, in which she will discuss her experience in the music world and her creative process.

Llorenc Barber

Llorenç Barber is a musician, composer, theorist, musicologist, and sound artist. He introduced musical minimalism to Spain and is the creator of projects such as plurifocal music (city concerts, naumachiae). He is also known for founding collectives (actum, flatus, Taller de Música Mundana) focused on avant-garde art and postmodern music, and for creating festivals, conferences, manifestos, and works of gestural, spoken, improvised, conceptual, and transversal music. He has collaborated with Roy Hart, Ramón Barce, Ligeti, Kagel, Carmelo Bernaola, John Cage, Carlos Galán, Alvin Curran, Takeisa Suzuki, Carles Santos, and Montserrat Palacios, among many others. For Barber, a musician who is only a musician is not a musician. His presentation at Cartografías Sonoras will focus on the practice of sound art in public spaces.

Efrén López

Efrén López (Valencia, 1972) is a musician, composer, producer, and sound engineer specializing in plucked string instruments from medieval Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Central Asia. He studied hurdy-gurdy with Maurizio Martinotti, Nigel Eaton, and Pascal Lefevre, and lute technique from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East with numerous teachers. He is the founder of the groups Trío Petrakis, López, Chemirani, L'Ham de Foc, Evo, Aman Aman, EAR, and Sabir. As a performer, he has participated in numerous projects with musicians from across Europe, the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, and India, including Jordi Savall, Capella de Ministrers, Göksel Baktağir, and Mihalis Kouloumis. Stelios Petrakis, Noma Omran, the Andalusian Orchestra of Rabat, The III Project, Sima Bina, the Daud Khan Ensemble, Parvathy Baul, Rocío Márquez, Maria del Mar Bonet, and Manolo García. As a teacher, he regularly leads workshops on instrumental technique (hurdy-gurdy, oud, bağlama, fretless guitar, rabab) and theory (makam, modal music, sound engineering) at various international centers. He is the co-artistic director of Labyrinth Catalunya and has participated in the recording of more than 70 albums and collaborated on theater and contemporary dance productions. His exploration will delve into the hidden aspects of composition and reveal the processes that lead to it, from the mind of the composer to the ear of the listener.
