A dialogue between art and science: from the Cosmos to Life, canvas by canvas. Carlos Briones
This talk proposes a journey through time, taking us from the Big Bang—the origin of everything, some 13.700 billion years ago—to the present day, where our species is part of a magnificent biodiversity. Along this path, we will explore the main stages of the evolution of the Cosmos and life as explained by science, using only paintings by artists from different eras and styles as visual metaphors. In doing so, we will demonstrate that science, the humanities, and art are interconnected branches of culture, capable of engaging in dialogue with one another in the search for answers to the fascinating questions that surround us.
The conference "A dialogue between art and science: from the Cosmos to Life, canvas by canvas" , by Carlos Briones, inaugurates the collaboration between the three organizing institutions, FECYT, the Residencia de Estudiantes and the CBA, whose signing will take place prior to the event.
Carlos Briones holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences (specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He is a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Center for Astrobiology (CSIC-INTA, associated with the NASA Astrobiology Program), where he leads a group investigating the origin and early evolution of life and the development of biosensors to characterize life on Earth or search for it beyond our planet. He has extensive experience in science communication as a lecturer, course coordinator, and contributor to print media, blogs, radio, and television. He is the co-author of several books, including *Origins: The Universe, Life, Humans* (Crítica, 2015, winner of the 2016 Prisma Prize for best popular science book) . He received the Tesla Prize in 2019 in recognition of his career in science communication. In 2020, he published his first solo popular science book: *Are We Alone? In Search of Other Life in the Cosmos * (Crítica). Also an author of short stories and poems, he won the Hiperión Poetry Prize for his book De donde estás ausente (Ed. Hiperión, 1993) . He is a staunch advocate of the Third Culture, which seeks to integrate science, the humanities, and the arts.
