Spaces for democracy
Democracy is not sustained solely by laws, institutions, and procedures. It also needs places: spaces where people can meet, linger without needing to consume, learn, rehearse, organize, care for one another, or simply share time. Libraries, cultural and social centers, rehearsal spaces, community gardens, climate shelters, and other spaces form a social infrastructure that is as discreet as it is crucial for communal life.
What role do these places play in the quality of our democracies? How can they contribute to combating isolation, inequality, and growing social fragmentation? This conversation, with which we close the 2026 edition of the Climate Refuge, explores these questions.el Círculo This summer, we propose to consider the spatial dimension of democracy: not only what facilities exist, but how they are designed, who can access them, what uses they allow, and to what extent their inhabitants can appropriate and transform them.
