Synopsis:
Regardless of how often you delete apps from your phone, the platform's allure draws you in. There's a growing discontent with platform culture, with megacorporations like Google and Facebook providing the essential software for others to use, software to which almost all of us are addicted. What can we do about them? And about our own addiction? In *Stuck on the Platform*, Geert Lovink, along with Jodi Dean, Bernard Stiegler, and Mark Fisher, among others, diagnoses this addictive condition and suggests strategies for breaking free. Analyzing the toxic symptoms of platform capitalism, Lovink proposes building a technosocial exodus movement; campaigns to break up monopolistic platforms, rebuilding the internet as public infrastructure, and removing certain corporations from internet governing bodies are just some of the thought-provoking proposals you'll find in this book. His superb work is delivered in an irreverent style, engaging with a wide range of literature for understanding the social impact of ongoing technological transformations. An essential work for thinking about the break with and alternatives to platform capitalism.
Geert Lovink, the book's author, is a research professor of interactive media at the Amsterdam Graduate School, a professor of media theory at the European Graduate School, and an associate professor of new media at the University of Amsterdam. Lovink is the founder and director of the Institute of Network Cultures, which aims to explore, document, and foster the transformative potential of new media in the economy and culture.
